Ivan's place: Unhappy new year_

"Happy New Year, all by myself... Cheers," said Ray, reclining on the table as he took a sip of his alcohol-free champagne.

Steven glanced at Ray as he entered the room, a puzzled expression on his face. "Uhh, hello?" he said, his voice displaying confusion. In response, Ray looked at Steven, whose demeanor was still pessimistic.

"I'm grateful for our friendship and all, but... time is slipping away, and I can't shake the feeling that I haven't truly lived my life." Ray took a deep breath as he grabbed his phone. After checking a few apps, he decided to turn it off and place it on the table.

A brief silence hung in the kitchen as Steven looked at Ray. Taking a deep breath, he broke the silence:

"How do you mean?" Steven asked.

"I don't know, man. Sometimes I feel like I was born in the wrong place at the wrong time. New Year's celebration is just a cruel reminder," responded Ray.

Steven walked to the chair next to Ray and sat on it. "Well, it's your chance to change things up, I don't understand what the problem is."

"Well, I'm happy this is over and all, but on the inside, I'm also feeling kind of sad. I can't change anything."

"...Why?"

"I don't know. Emotional dissonance, or maybe the fact that I have no choice over the trajectory of my life," said Ray as he finished his champagne.

"You seem unsure, but I somehow already know it. You're sad that 2023 didn't get you any further."

"Eh, maybe."

"Lonely because you didn't find the 'love of your life,' whatever that is supposed to be."

"... I don't know. Maybe I should wait until the day the right conditions are set, so I can finally blossom and..."

"Stop."

"What?"

"Maybe you should just wait until you stop living in a dream and actually try to change things."

Steven got up and briefly embraced Ray before walking out of the room and into the living room.

As Ray saw Steven walk through the threshold of the door, he looked around to see if there was anybody else inside the room. He was now all alone. "I should get a drink," he thought.

As Ray glanced over the fridge, he realized there was nothing else to drink.
